“Building Roads and Bridges for a Strong and Sustainable Community”

Ms. Ignacio gives the keynote message at the Malaybalay City Government’s first convocation of the year 2018. She talked about build building roads and bridges for a strong and sustainable community. Here are excerpts of her message:
“To have a strong and sustainable community, we need an effective government that gets the rights thing done. We need a government that works in healthy partnership with the private sector and its citizens. We need economic and social policies that are people-centered and will not destroy our environment. We need sound urban and rural infrastructure. We need executives and managers who can look ahead and plan for our ever-changing world. We need visionary, principle-centered, and servant leaders who will engage and consult the people they serve.

“We know that roads and bridges connect places. But, they are built not simply to connect destinations but to connect people. What we are talking about here are the relationships of people in a community. I believe that people – you, me, young and old, each and every one of us here are the roads and bridges to a strong and stable community. Nation-building begins with the individual persons of that nation. I’d like you all to bring home three ideas today. You and I can build a strong community through: (1) creating a culture of care and kindness; (2) citizenship, by this I mean active citizenship; and (3) change, and by this I mean change from within, not without.

“The first is very basic. Care. Or, concern and kindness. Pagkalinga, pagamuma, pagatiman. These are very basic but, sometimes, this is lost in our communities. The opposite of care is indifference. Marami sa atin, wala nang pakialam. The second is citizenship, which, according to Charles Handy, is the chance to make a difference in the place where you belong. Active citizenship is about individuals working for the betterment of their community through volunteer work, economic participation, public involvement, and other such efforts to improve life of everyone. Finally, change begins with you, me, each of us. We must be the change we wish to see in the world.
“Each and every one of you here is in a unique position to exercise your citizenship. No matter how you got to your position – whether you’ve earned it, worked hard for it, appointed by force, or whatever magic put you there – the fact is you are in that position. You owe it to your community to do whatever good you can. Sometimes, we might feel we do not matter. Let me tell you, you do. Every part of the organization has a role to play. Every member is important to achieving it’s vision.
“Whether you are the department head, the assistant, the messenger, janitor, security, you are important. It may not be like that all around us, but that is a true. Every person can contribute something to the community. How can you be the change you wish to see? (1) Be the solution, not the problem. (2) Focus on your circle of control and influence. (3) Know your mission and goals and stay on course.”

4 Disciplines of Execution

Ms. Ignacio and Marywoods faculty member, Mr. Richard Casanos, attend the training on “4 Disciplines of Execution”. As a leadership school using the “Leader in Me” process, the 4 disciplines of execution are embedded in the Marywoods Academy culture. Also known as “4DX”, the objective of the process is to teach leaders how to help their teams execute their highest priorities. It is described as “a proven set of practices that have been tested and refined by hundreds of organizations and thousands of teams over many years. When a company or an individual adheres to these disciplines, they achieve superb results, regardless of the goal. The disciplines are powerful yet simple. They are not, however, simplistic. They can be challenging to apply and sustain as they require us to work differently than we normally do.”
The training was facilitated by Mr. Renato Montemayor and was held at the Center for Leadership and Change,  Makati, Manila on 29 July 2015.  For more information about the “4DX”, you may click on this link.
